Transforming your School with Music - What SMS can do for you.

Updated: May 19

10th March 2026

Over the years, I’ve seen how a vibrant music program can transform a school environment, inspiring students and staff alike. If you’re looking to enrich your school’s culture with music, you’re in the right place! Music is a magical thread that weaves through the fabric of school life, bringing joy, creativity, and a sense of community to every corner of the classroom.

Today, I'd like to explore how Sussex Music School can help build a thriving musical community from within.

Why School Music Matters

Music education is more than just learning notes and rhythms. It’s about nurturing confidence, teamwork, and emotional expression. When schools invest in quality music services, they open doors to countless opportunities for students to shine. From choir performances to orchestras, from individual instrumental lessons to group workshops, music becomes a powerful tool for inclusion and personal growth.

Imagine a school where every child has the chance to pick up an instrument, join a choir, or compose their own song. This is the kind of environment that Sussex Music School helps create. Our approach is warm, inclusive, and designed to reach every student, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds or with additional needs. This ensures that music truly belongs to everyone.

The Impact on Students and Schools

The benefits of a robust music program are profound. Here are some key impacts:

  • Boosts Academic Performance: Studies show that students involved in music often excel in other subjects.

  • Enhances Social Skills: Playing in groups teaches cooperation and communication.

  • Builds Self-Esteem: Performing in front of an audience helps students gain confidence.

  • Encourages Creativity: Music allows students to express themselves in unique ways.

Exploring Sussex Music School

We are fortunate to have a rich network of music teachers dedicated to supporting schools. Many of our teachers are also qualified primary or secondary teachers. They have additional training and experience in SEND provision. Without exception, they have graduated from the best music schools and universities and worked professionally (and often continue to do so). Ongoing training is at the heart of what we offer our teachers.

We can offer a wide range of programs tailored to meet the needs of primary and secondary schools. Whether you’re a head teacher looking to enhance your curriculum or a music lead seeking expert support, there’s something here for you.

What’s on Offer?

  • Curriculum Music Support: Expert teachers help deliver engaging music lessons that align with national standards.

How Sussex Music School Builds a Culture of Music

From our Partner School St Andrews C of E Primary in Hove:

"We have used SMS now for the last two years and are now in the third year of working with them. They have been both accommodating and supportive of the existing setup here at St Andrew’s, bringing both rigour and expertise to their teaching which has ensured the very highest standards of both teaching and music outcomes. All of the teachers that we have worked with from SMS have been excellent and indeed for those who are in their third year of working with us, they have become very valued members of staff. The curriculum is well thought through and the SMS approach ensures that children in Years 4, 5 and 6 all learn a musical instrument which has given many children an opportunity to experience being a musician for three consecutive years."

We cannot recommend SMS highly enough!

What Makes Sussex Music School Special?

  • Experienced Teachers: Our team is made up of highly qualified, passionate educators who bring music to life.

  • Local Focus: With over 10 years of experience working across Sussex, we understand the unique needs of local schools.

  • Comprehensive Programs: From curriculum support to private lessons for all ages, we cover every aspect of music education and every instrument.

  • Community Spirit: We foster a welcoming environment where every student feels valued and encouraged.

  • Support and Points of Contact: We do all the admin and marketing for you, working directly with parents, and our SLT is dedicated to being available to you.

The recent Ofsted report for one of our partner schools, St Andrews in Hove, beautifully captures this:

"Music is the beating heart of school life. The choir includes everybody and inspires all. Everyone gets to learn musical instruments. Disadvantaged pupils are well represented in every opportunity, including the impressive school orchestra."

This is the kind of success story that makes me excited about the future of music education in Sussex. We know it's a difficult time and budgets are more stretched than ever—let us help you plan a whole school approach that really works.
