Classic FM Music Teacher of the Year Nomination
for Robbie from St Andrews CofE Primary

See what the children at St Andrews CofE Primary say about our Curriculum Teacher Samba Band Leader and Orchestra Leader Robbie in his nomination for Classic FM's Music Teacher of the Year 2026.

Mr Mitchell was kind and his perfect pitch and knowledge of music never let us down. When we made our songs he knew exactly what notes we needed to play and when we needed to play them. He taught us how to play many different instruments and got me interested in playing one.

He is passionate about music and I will be devastated when he retires. I have enjoyed every year he has taught us and I know others have too. I have never seen such a brilliant music teacher and i hope he wins the award because he truly, truly, truly deserves it!

He is a very kind person and always makes us laugh. I have had him teaching me since Y4 when he taught us recorder. I’ve always been musical (I play trumpet, guitar, piano and the list goes on) so, because so many students played instruments, he made an orchestra for the school and it is thriving.

Mr Mitchell has made our school so musical we all have learnt samba and can read music. He also sowed the seeds for many other bands and we all love

Mr Mitchell.

He is also co-running a charity event for wishing well where we perform the songs we wrote in music lessons to our parents. He is so lovely and I will sincerely miss him. I’ve only told the tip of his iceberg of greatness. I have said everything I can. This award would mean the world to him. You know what to do.

Mr Mitchell is one of the most inspiring and talented music teachers I’ve had and makes every Friday afternoon fun. He is always teaching us new things in a simple, understandable way.

For the three years he has been teaching us, we’ve learnt ukulele, samba, recorder, songwriting, the cup song and singing.

Mr Mitchell has filled our hearts with a love for music(even the people who apparently ‘couldn’t do music’). We were all devastated when Mr Mitchell stopped teaching singing assemblies and I will miss him in secondary school. We are all so lucky to have him teach us and also run orchestra; it feels great to be part of something bigger when you play with other musicians.

There’s something special about Mr Mitchell-maybe it’s his dad jokes, maybe it’s his way of teaching, maybe it’s the spark he gives our school, but whatever it is, he makes St Andrew’s special.

Mr Mitchell inspires me as a music teacher because he has been teaching me music since year 4 and in that time he has got me more engaged in music. I now do lessons on an instrument outside of lessons. He proves that you don't need to do lots of instruments to be able to be good. He says every one is musical no matter what just some are stronger at specific things.

I have felt much better at music since having him as a teacher. I used to be worried on how I do and think i cant do it but he has showed me that to do it I just need to practice. He has been an amazing teacher who has inspired everyone he has taught.

I have learnt so much that I could not do before. I leant the recorder, the cub song, samba instruments, the ukulele  and even to write my own song while working with a team.

He even showed us people doing music in other places and why he inspired me to carry on and never made us do something we did not want to do. he pushed me to carry on even when I thought I couldnt. He was an amazing teacher who inspired everything and made me way more musical.
