Curriculum Music in Schools
Sussex Music School provide exceptional quality curriculum music lessons in schools. Our teachers are highly qualified and experienced.
We have developed our own curriculum which incorporates a year of whole class ensemble tuition in Y4 (recorders).
Our curriculum aligns with the National Curriculum and integrates all guidance from the National Plan for Music Education. It’s surprisingly affordable to let us teach Music for you. No added costs for your school – much better value than hiring a teacher.
We look after their PD so you can just enjoy the benefits. In an era of falling pupil numbers, music can offer a way for your school to stand out (we’ll help with this, too)!

What Ofsted say about our Partner School
Music is the beating heart of school life. The choir includes everybody and inspires all. Everyone gets to learn musical instruments. Disadvantaged pupils are well represented in every opportunity, including the impressive school orchestra. Ofsted Report for SMS Partner School St Andrews, Hove
All children will learn:
-
Singing – the ‘golden thread’ of Primary Music
-
Performing skills - all learn an instrument for at least a year
-
Music reading skills – gradually integrated from KS1
-
Improvising – children express themselves artistically
-
Composing- children learn to construct using the building blocks of music.
-
Listening skills - including great musicians and composers – cultural capital
-
Children learn effectively through singing, playing classroom percussion, their own instrument where they learn one outside the classroom, and the use of ICT.
Sessions in Primary schools last ½ hour (KS1) or 45-60 minutes (KS2). A typical secondary lesson lasts 1 hour.
Lessons cover the National Curriculum requirements. In primary schools, a teacher or teaching assistant is required to be present throughout to aid the visiting teacher as necessary.
Curriculum Teachers
At SMS we believe in developing our music workforce, enabling them to use up-to-date teaching methods and fully understand the needs of each learner. To this end our professional teachers receive ongoing training, monitoring and support from our senior team. We are incredibly proud of our brilliant teaching team.
SEND - our teachers receive regular training in SEND and use adaptive teaching to include all learners. We are passionate believers in equity and inclusion. We provide in-depth training and support in neurodiversity. Examples of recent CPD include: Relational Practice, Emotion Coaching and Polyvagal theory.
Only the best teachers in the field locally are accredited to SMS. Valuing our teachers is paramount as this will translate into the best musical experiences for our students.
