Celebrating Our Music Teacher: Robbie's Nomination for Classic FM Music Teacher of the Year Awards 2026

Updated: Jul 6

We are delighted to announce that our amazing teacher, Robbie, has been nominated by pupils at St Andrews CofE Primary School in Hove for the Classic FM Music Teacher of the Year Awards 2026! The children worked so hard to write heartfelt letters of praise for Robbie, who teaches Year 5 and 6 Curriculum Music. Click here to read what the children said about Mr. Mitchell.

Robbie's Impact on Music Education

Robbie also runs the Samba Band, which recently performed at the Children's Parade as part of the Brighton Festival. Additionally, he leads the school orchestra. This orchestra boasts over 30 members, including both staff and children. Robbie dedicates countless hours to creating bespoke orchestral arrangements, ensuring that every single player can participate and shine.

His commitment to music education is truly inspiring. A well-deserved nomination, whatever the result! Well done, Robbie! A huge thank you to those lovely pupils and teachers at St Andrews for taking the time to recognize his hard work.

Building a Musical Community

At Sussex Music School, we have been working with St Andrews for many years. Our teachers form an integral part of their team. Their devotion to ensuring that music is woven into the fabric of the school, rather than being an add-on, is a real testament to their commitment.

"Music is the beating heart of school life. The choir includes everybody and inspires all. Everyone gets to learn musical instruments. Disadvantaged pupils are well represented in every opportunity, including the impressive school orchestra." This quote from the Ofsted Report 2025 for SMS Partner School St Andrews in Hove perfectly encapsulates our mission.

The Importance of Music Education

Music education plays a vital role in the development of children. It fosters creativity, teamwork, and discipline. When children engage in music, they learn to express themselves in new ways. They also develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Encouraging Participation

We believe that every child should have the opportunity to participate in music. Whether it's through singing in a choir, playing an instrument, or joining a band, music can be a powerful tool for personal growth. At Sussex Music School, we strive to create an inclusive environment where all students feel welcome.

The Role of Teachers

Teachers like Robbie are essential in nurturing a love for music. They inspire students to explore their musical talents and encourage them to take risks. A supportive teacher can make all the difference in a child's musical journey.

Building Confidence Through Music

Participating in music can significantly boost a child's confidence. When children perform in front of an audience, they learn to overcome their fears and embrace their unique talents. This experience can be transformative, helping them grow not just as musicians but as individuals.

Our Commitment to Music Education

At Sussex Music School, we are dedicated to providing high-quality music education. We offer curriculum music, music provision consultancy, and instrumental lessons across a wide range of instruments. Our experienced teachers are passionate about sharing their love for music with students of all ages.

Supporting Schools

We work closely with schools to build a culture of music from within. Our goal is to ensure that music is an integral part of the school experience. By collaborating with schools, we help create opportunities for all students to engage with music.

Private Lessons for All Ages

In addition to our work in schools, we also offer private instrumental lessons for both adults and children. Whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your skills, our dedicated teachers are here to help you on your musical journey.

Join Us in Celebrating Music

As we celebrate Robbie's nomination, let's also celebrate the power of music in education. Music brings people together, fosters creativity, and enriches lives. We invite everyone to join us in supporting music education in our schools.

Together, we can create a vibrant musical community where every child has the opportunity to thrive. Let's continue to inspire and uplift one another through the joy of music!
