Lunchtime Djembe Club for Wivelsfield Primary
Sussex Music School is excited to be launching our lunchtime Djembe clubs at Wivelsfield Primary school after half term. As part of our Ensemble in Every School initiative we are so pleased to be able to offer this cultural and musical opportunity to one of our Partner schools.
Run by our curriculum and instrumental teacher, Orla, children in KS1 and KS2 will:
Learn a range of drumming techniques on the Djembe drum.
Explore the history and traditions of the West African Djembe drum.
Perform call and response rhythms in a drumming circle, then combine pieces using polyrhythms.
Layer multiple parts to create vibrant sounds.
Improvise their own rhythms and take turns leading the drumming circle.
Develop listening as a group and enhance concentration.
Djembe is a drum from West Africa believe to have been first made hundreds of years ago in the "Kingdom of “Mali” which included the modern- day countries of Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Gambia and Senegal.
