Katie is a singer and multi-instrumentalist who has been teaching young people and adults the joy
of music making since graduating from Goldsmiths College, London with her music degree.
From her time at Primary School, where she taught her friends songs and dances in the
playground, to leading mass choirs of over 1000 singers, Katie has always been a passionate
advocate of music and the arts!
‘I believe that music is vital to every young person’s development and growth. The benefits of
learning an instrument, from any age, transforms the foundations of learning, builds confidence
and develops vital communication skills, best of all it engages all participants in the magical
language of music’.
Katie teaches singing, the piano, flute and alto saxophone and lessons in composition, theory and
the history of music. She creates tailor made lessons aimed to inspire a range of abilities and
learning styles and prepares students for exams, auditions and performances.
‘I believe that we are all musicians and it is my aim to help all those I teach to discover who they
are as a musician and to inspire a life-long love of music.
I am committed to providing the highest standard of music education whilst creating a fun and
inclusive learning environment.
I have high expectations and believe in the potential of all individuals I teach, aiming for the
greatest level of outcome possible.
I want those I teach to feel good about who they are as musicians and in the work that they create.
I hope to inspire trust, so that they are able to find a deeper level of self-expression and for them
to share their music with others, with confidence and pride in their abilities’.
Katie is the founder of a number of community choirs and has hosted
Katie is the founder of the JOY Community Choirs and has hosted a variety of charity concerts
and performances, including as part of the Brighton Festival, with the choir recordings used in
interviews with Kate Tempest on BBC Radio.
In March 2022 the InJOY Singers performed and recorded with Turner Prize winning artist Helen
Cammock, at the Serpentine Gallery and at Barking Town Hall Council Chambers, as part of the
Radio Ballads show.
She has been music director and choir master for many musicals including; Grease, We Will Rock
You, The Sound of Music, The Lion King Jr, Bugsy Malone, Mary Poppins, The Wizard of Oz,
Joseph and his Technicolor Dream Coat and Oliver. Katie worked as choir master for the Lewes
Operatic Society youth opera production of Les Miserables and directed and produced a local
youth production of Romeo and Juliet.
‘Whilst at Goldsmiths College I studied Jazz Vocals as part of my performance specialism, training with
Louise Gibbs and later performing with local legend Herbie Flowers.
I am a keen lover of opera, and in my formative years trained with Jacqueline March and in 2013 I
sang in the Glyndebourne opera, ‘Imago’, singing solo with the Aurora Orchestra in the Ding Dong
wedding scene! I was thrilled to perform again at Glyndebourne in 2019 in their operas ‘Agreed’ and
‘Don Giovanni: Behind the Curtain’. I have toured with the NSO singing the delicious role of The
Gingerbread Women in Delius’s ‘A Village Romeo and Juliet’, played Koukouli in ‘L’etoile’ and
perhaps one of my favourite roles was singing as a witch in the Kantanti Ensemble’s production of
‘Dido en Aeneas’.
Katie has recorded and performed with numerous bands including touring internationally and
recording with the Indie-poop band ‘The Popguns’. She performed the album launch of ‘The
Perfect English Weather’ in Brighton and enjoys playing with jazz ensembles across Sussex.
