• Singing – the ‘golden thread’ of Primary Music 

• Performing skills -  all learn an instrument for at least a year 

• Music reading skills – gradually integrated from KS1 

• Improvising – children express themselves artistically 

• Composing- children learn to construct using the building blocks of music. 

• Listening skills -  including great musicians and composers – cultural capital 

• Children learn effectively through singing, playing classroom percussion, their own instrument where they learn one outside the classroom, and the use of ICT.

Sessions in Primary schools last ½ hour (KS1) or 45-60 minutes (KS2). A typical secondary lesson lasts 1 hour. 

  

Lessons cover the National Curriculum requirements. In primary schools, a teacher or teaching assistant is required to be present throughout to aid the visiting teacher as necessary.
