KAREN

Piano , Violin and Viola
East Grinstead, Gatwick and Haywards Heath

A committed and creative teacher, Karen Hoy takes pupils on the violin, viola and piano. She is a graduate of Birmingham Conservatoire, and built on this experience with a Post Graduate Music Teaching Diploma from the University of Reading. She writes compositions, puzzles and games of her own to help students take the next step, both with new notes, and with new stylistic features, and, having over twenty years experience of teaching, and involvement as a member of the string section of several different orchestras over that time, including the Royal Tunbridge Wells Symphony Orchestra and Mid Sussex Sinfonia, as well as performing the solo parts of the Bruch and Mendelssohn violin concertos, she has much experience with which to inspire and excite the next generation.

She seeks to learn and share diverse repertoire, recently performing Sakura (Cherry Blossom) with effects mimicking traditional Japanese plucked-string instruments. During the lockdowns, she took part in a number of Benedetti Foundation courses, which included playing virtually with others, listening to young people perform together, and learning from violinists from countries around the world. The courses also included warming up, aural awareness, consideration of the character of the music, which are useful strategies to help musicians to really understand and get a feel for the style of music they are learning, as well as encouraging the development of positive and determined attitudes.

She likes strawberries and dislikes brussels sprouts!
